Students are shown a sentence on a slide and must write down what happened next to a time limit of two minutes, using three sentences. Could be done in pairs or individually. 20 slides to choose from. Adapt as you wish. This would suit a class with good prior knowledge and flair.

Five mini Battleships games for Y8 (maybe Y9). These make use of three chunks, not just two. Thanks, Vincent Everett, for the idea. All in French. Two tenses used. A useful starter, maybe.

10 mini versions of Battleships as starters. In Word (editable). A reading aloud task basically. Past, present and future verb forms. All in French. There is a translation version of this too which is harder.

'Find five facts.' A reading comprehension activity which could be used as a starter, if you just select two or three of the ten slides. Or you could use it for a larger part of a lesson. It's a chance to engage with harder short texts. Students just read to a time limit and find five facts. Topics include: Marie Curie, the Tour de France, sharks, spiders, Asterix the Gaul. You could use this in Y10-11 too.

A starter with 20 slides, each with four sentences, two of which are possible, two unlikely or impossible. Students look at each slide and choose the two likely sentences.

A dialogue for reading aloud and adapting. Suggestions for changes provided. 'At the pharmacy.'
